At Lovebug, everything we do is for the love of cats and the planet, and this Saturday, April 22nd, is Earth Day - the annual celebration of our planet, to raise awareness of how much we need to protect planet earth and its resources!
The History of Earth Day
Earth Day began in 1970, and really started the modern environmental movement. This very first Earth Day started discussions around environmental issues, bringing these previously less discussed issues to wider public attention.
Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22nd every year and is now believed to be marked by more than 1 billion people worldwide! According to the organisers, this means it’s often recognised as “the largest secular observance in the world”. And it’s perhaps no surprise - these days, the reality of climate change is difficult to ignore, and more and more people are becoming aware of our impact upon the planet.
Earth Day 2023
This year, the theme is Invest In Our Planet - which was also the theme of Earth Day 2022. For the first time in 33 years, Earth Day’s organisers have chosen to keep the same theme over two years - highlighting just how important it is.
The aim of this year’s Earth Day is to continue encouraging governments, businesses, institutions and individuals to make big changes, hold ourselves accountable, and to really invest in our planet to ensure a better future for everyone.
If you want to get involved, why not take a look at Earth Day’s 52 ways to invest in our planet? Their resource is packed with ideas and inspiration, full of ways that we can all help to make a difference. Whether it’s getting involved with community cleanups, petitioning the government, or making more environmentally-friendly choices at home, there are plenty of ways to take small steps towards positive action. And hopefully, these little sustainable steps can become long term habits!
